Classes for Parents & Families

The cornerstone of our program is parent involvement and education. Each year, Head Start of Yamhill County offers a variety of classes for families. Classes currently being offered will change throughout the year, so please check with your classroom teacher for a schedule of current classes. Quarterly, classes being offered will be updated to our calendar here on the website.

Classes are also open to community members and are offered free of charge.

Class Descriptions:

Make Parenting a Pleasure

Identify your strengths as a parent, take better care of yourself and discover new ways to make parenting easier. Come connect with other parents and together learn how to better understand your child’s behavior and ways to discipline that fit your child’s age. This group uses activities and video clips with plenty of time to talk with other parents.

TOPICS COVERED WILL INCLUDE:

Circle of Security

This 10 week class is a relationship based early intervention program designed to enhance attachment security between parents and children. Decades of university-based research have confirmed that secure children exhibit increased empathy, greater self-esteem, better relationships with parents and peers, enhanced school readiness, and an increased capacity to handle emotions more effectively when compared with children who are not secure.

Nurturing Father's

During the course of this 13 week class, you will develop attitudes and skills to become the nurturing father. Topics covered will include:

Couples Class

A 10 session class in strengthening the couple relationship through exploration of parenting attitudes and skills. Topics covered will include:

Financial Literacy

Offered by Housing Authority of Yamhill County, this four-part class is taught in 2.5 hour sections. Topics include budgeting, credit, attitudes about money, and much more. This is a fun, interactive class specifically tailored to the adult learner, providing for lots of input and question and answer time.

Beginning English as a Second Language (ESL)

This year, Head Start is partnering with McMinnville School District and Chemeketa Community College to offer ESL classes. Classes are restricted to residents of the McMinnville School District catchment area.
